Tomorrow my bright eyed boy turns 3, so today was birthday cake baking day :) I love to bake. I was using my mom's chocolate cake recipe, a family favourite. My brother Steve once called it 'unadulterated', because it's nothing fancy but tastes amazing. Mom always bakes a sheet cake and serves it with whipped cream. It's divine.
Steve's getting married in 2 weeks, and I've been elected to make their wedding cake, so this birthday cake was sort of a trial run, on a much smaller scale, for what I'll be doing for the wedding. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out! You'll see it tomorrow, I'm sure.
"Tell me about your milk..."
"...it's straight from the cow..."
Raw milk is a pretty controversial topic. Raw means it's unpasteurized. Isn't that bad, you ask? Depending on the cows, depending on the farm. Raw milk from a factory farm is something I wouldn't touch. Raw milk from a grass fed cow, on a small farm? Now I'm interested. Pasteurization kills bad bacteria that can be present in milk (not uncommon with industrial cows), but it also kills a lot of the beneficial bacteria - and nutrients - in the process. The word around here is that it's illegal for farmers to sell raw milk - they can drink their own cows' raw milk, but they can't even give the stuff away. So I thought I was outta luck, until I overheard the above conversation at my local farmer's market. Now I bring 2L of fresh, raw, whole milk home to my fridge every Friday. I am developing a relationship with the farmer, and it feels like more human way to shop. I'd love to take my kids out to their farm soon, for them to really understand where our milk and eggs come from - cows and chickens, not the fridge at the grocery store.

Doesn't he look so sneaky?
He had my blessing to have a taste. Just tea. Wish it were a latte, but I am avoiding coffee until my mouth has healed a little more.

Just another beautiful weed today :)

239: Sundown

Weed? Yes. Beautiful? Yes.
I so appreciate how this project has caused me to see my everyday surroundings in a totally different light.

I've been accused of not liking shoes. Not true, I like shoes. I just don't like uncomfortable shoes. That's why you'll find plenty of flat slip-on sneakers in my closet, flip-flops, and only one pair of high heels. The only pair of heels I've ever bought in my life. And my love of comfortable shoes is why you'll see me jumping with excitement at the arrival of my new sangria coloured Chuck Taylors.
Wild haired Little Miss Bailey, set on getting her brother's pajamas on her little body. It didn't turn out like she had hoped.

236: Puree

Nothing special today, just me eating pureed soup. Right now, I'm living on a diet of scrambled eggs, soup, and ice cream. Oh yeah, and pain killers.

I took only one shot today - snapped this at my dentist's office before I got very sleepy and happy from the nitrous oxide. I had three wisdom teeth pulled, and two cavities filled. Needless to say, I'm in a little pain now that the freezing has worn off.

More rain, which I love. I had another shot with my garden in the background, but Markus liked this one better "because this one has BIG splashes!" That it does :)
